The Neapolitan tombola is a traditional game loved by generations of people from Campania for its liveliness and endless fun. A simple game, yet full of meaning: draw the numbers, check your card and hope for luck! The real magic of the Neapolitan tombola lies in the festive atmosphere created during the game. The laughter, the shouts of joy when someone wins, not forgetting the usual fool who, at the very first number drawn, shouts: “AMBO!!!” (meaning 'two in a row!', an early — and often premature — victory call).

The Neapolitan tombola was born in 1734 from a dispute between King Charles III of Bourbon and Friar Gregorio Maria Rocco. The king wanted to legalise the lotto game to stop the theft of money it caused, but the friar demanded that the Christmas period, traditionally devoted to prayer, be respected.

To solve the problem, the people of Naples turned the lotto into a family game during the festive season, gathering around a wicker basket, the “panariello” (little basket), from which they drew numbered pieces. And that is how the Tombola was born — known to Neapolitans as “Tumbulella” (little tombola).
