The fratelli Caponi ('Caponi brothers') were born in 1956 in Totò, Peppino e la malafemmina, in perhaps the most beloved scene in Italian comedy: the letter scene. Totò dictates, Peppino writes, and between "punto e punto e virgola" ("full stop and semicolon"), absurd repetitions and proudly mangled Italian, the two uncles write to the "malafemmina" ("wicked woman") to save their nephew from a doomed love affair. It's pure genius, improvisation and heart: two "provincial" Neapolitans facing the big city ("noi vi rimborseremo", "we shall reimburse you") with the slightly bewildered dignity of those who never give up.

That letter became a shared cultural treasure, quoted, imitated (even by Troisi and Benigni) and learnt by heart by entire generations. Wearing the fratelli Caponi means carrying Naples that laughs at itself while staying proud: the art of turning embarrassment into comic poetry.
