The Submerged Park of Baia
This phenomenon led the ancient Romans to build an artificial island, a truly one-of-a-kind structure, in order to enjoy the benefits of these thermal resources originating from the volcanic activity of the Campi Flegrei.
The latest hypotheses put forward by archaeologists suggest that the columns, now visible at a depth of around 10 metres, were the foundations of a large platform where the steam filled the baths of Marcus Licinius Crassus Frugi. If these interpretations are correct, it would be fascinating to link the name of the owner of this incredible "thermal island" to the nearby town of Ercolano (Herculaneum) via a road.
But beyond these hypotheses, what offers a truly unique spectacle underwater today are these majestic columns, some fallen and others still standing in their original position, from which traces of volcanic emissions still emerge, now less intense following the eruption of Monte Nuovo in 1538.
What remains, however, is the beauty of an almost lunar landscape stretching across the seabed, in perfect harmony with a unique marine flora and fauna, thanks to the creation of a habitat with a distinctive character, shaped by the underground force of the Campi Flegrei.
