When things take a turn for the worse in Naples, the name gets shortened: not San Gennaro, but San Gennà. It's an invocation, a sigh, and sometimes a reproach, addressed to the patron saint who has protected the city since 305 AD and who, three times a year in the Duomo, causes his blood to liquefy inside its vials while an entire cathedral holds its breath. On 19 September, the first Saturday of May and 16 December, Naples stops to watch that reliquary: if the blood liquefies, the year ahead will be a good one.
On the back of the shirt is the reliquary itself, golden with its vials, painted like dripping graffiti. The words San Gennà above, the Napoli Tattà® logo beside it.
