From the outside you look like a Tibetan monk, inside your nerves are holding an emergency meeting. The calm is there, but hanging by a thread.
You smile in the meeting, nod along, answer the same question for the third time with perfect grace. From the outside, you look like a Tibetan monk. Inside, meanwhile, every nerve in your body has called an emergency meeting and is voting by a show of hands.
The phrase
«TENGO ’NA CALMA MOLTO NERVOSA.» — Neapolitan for “I’m keeping a very nervous kind of calm” — is the most accurate snapshot of patience held together by sheer willpower. Calm on the surface, storm behind the scenes: the kind of composure kept up through gritted teeth and deep breaths. Whoever wears it is saying it with style: better not to push your luck.
