Who is Minollo? Totoro speaks Neapolitan

If you've come here searching for «Minollo», you've probably seen the t-shirt, or seen it on someone, and wondered who that green giant with the round eyes was. Here's the answer.

Minollo is Totoro

Minollo is the Neapolitan name for the most famous neighbour in Japanese animation: Totoro, the furry giant that Hayao Miyazaki gave to the world in 1988 with the Studio Ghibli film. In Japan he's called Totoro, and in English we know him by the same name. In Naples, as happens to anyone who stays around these parts long enough, he picked up a name from the alleyway: Minollo.

Is Minollo an animal?

No, and neither is Totoro. He doesn't exist in nature: he's a forest spirit invented by Miyazaki, part owl, part cat, part bear, with a belly you could fall asleep on. In the film, only children can see him, and that already tells you everything about what kind of friend he is.

Why a t-shirt

There are friends who don't speak, but who are always there. This t-shirt is for anyone who grew up with Studio Ghibli cartoons and never stopped looking for a big, silent friend at the bus stop. For grown-ups who stay children at heart, for parents to show off at the school gates, for a gift that brings a smile the moment you see it.

The design is ours, the name belongs to Naples, and the t-shirt is printed here.
