Chiesa del Cenacolo (Church of the Cenacle)

The Chiesa del Cenacolo (Church of the Cenacle) is a monumental church in Naples, located along Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Nearby you'll also find the church of Santa Maria Apparente and that of Santa Caterina da Siena.

History and description

Although it is today considered one of the most significant nineteenth-century churches in the city, it was originally nothing more than the chapel of a rest home for the elderly. Later on, the church underwent various extensions, which mainly affected the façade.

The exterior is entirely made of tuff stone; the entrance is preceded by four columns in the Doric order. The interior has a rectangular layout and features bas-relief works, particularly on the main altar. It is also worth remembering that this was the first church in the city to be run entirely by laypeople.
