Masseria dei Domenicani
The Masseria dei Domenicani (Farmhouse of the Dominicans) is one of the oldest historic-religious buildings in the area of Soccavo, a district to the west of Naples. This convent complex is located in Via Vicinale San Domenico.
History
The complex was built by the Dominican friars around 1617 on land they owned, on which there already stood an ancient tower, probably dating from the Swabian era or earlier, which until then had served as a monastery and which, according to tradition, had welcomed Saint Dominic (San Domenico); it had been built by Carlomanno, who became the first abbot of that monastic community.
Just a few years after the new complex was built, between 1654 and 1656, the friars abandoned the monastery due to an outbreak of plague.
Today the seventeenth-century monastery has been reduced to ruins, and the tower has been converted into private homes. The complex also includes a small chapel of the same period dedicated to San Domenico (Saint Dominic), in which no religious services have been held since the 1990s.
